For Andres Santana, repairing an instrument has never been simply about fixing a mechanism. It is about understanding how an instrument should feel, respond and sound in the hands of a musician.
Originally from Cuba, Andres began his formal musical education at Cuba's National Institute of the Arts, where he studied clarinet along with music theory, harmony, counterpoint, chamber music, music history and related disciplines. He later expanded his studies to include saxophone, flute, pedagogy and, importantly, woodwind and brasswind instrument repair.
His background as both a musician and technician would shape the rest of his career.
Andres went on to perform and study in Cuba, including experience associated with the Symphonic Orchestra of Matanzas and the historic Sauto Theatre of Matanzas. He also developed extensive experience as a music educator, teaching saxophone, flute and clarinet.
More Than 30 Years Serving Miami's Music Community
After bringing his experience to South Florida, Andres became a familiar and trusted name among Miami musicians, music educators and school band programs.
Through AS Woodwind & Brass Repairs, he has spent decades repairing and maintaining instruments for public and private schools, teachers, students, professional musicians, churches and private customers throughout the Miami area.
For much of that time, Andres didn't need a website.
His business was built the old-fashioned way: one instrument, one musician and one recommendation at a time.
Band directors referred other band directors. Teachers sent their students. Musicians returned with their next instrument. Families who trusted Andres with one repair came back years later with another.
That word-of-mouth reputation remains at the heart of AS Woodwind & Brass Repairs today.
A Musician's Approach to Repair
Andres's background as a clarinetist, saxophonist, flutist and educator gives him a perspective that goes beyond the repair bench.
He understands that an instrument can be mechanically functional and still not perform the way a musician needs it to.
Whether working on a student's first instrument, maintaining an instrument for a school program, or addressing the needs of an experienced professional player, Andres approaches each repair with the same objective:
